Verse for the week:
“the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his
life a ransom for many.” Mt 20.28
Bible reading for the day: Ephesians 5.8-21
8 …for at one time you
were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of
light 9 (for the fruit of light is found in
all that is good and right and true), 10 and try
to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Take no
part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose
them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of
the things that they do in secret. 13 But
when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for
anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,
“Awake, O sleeper,
and arise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”
and arise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”
15 Look carefully then how
you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the
best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore
do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do
not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with
the Spirit,19 addressing one another in psalms and
hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your
heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything
to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting
to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Prayer (based on TRIP** method): Gracious and almighty Father, thank you
for hauling me out of the darkness and waking me and my brothers & sisters
to life in Jesus Christ. Repent us of a sleepy faith that wanders back to
shameful, dark deeds and wastes the new day.
Now that you have roused us from the darkness, grant us to live wisely:
making the most of every opportunity and always giving thanks to you for
everything…in Jesus’ name I ask this. Amen.
What is the
significance of baptism for daily living?
It signifies that the old Adam in us, together with all sins
and evil desires, should be drowned by daily sorrow for sin and repentance and
be put to death, and that the new person should come forth every day and rise
to live before God in righteousness and purity forever.
Where is this written?
Saint Paul says in Romans, “We were buried therefore with
him by Baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the
dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life” (Romans
6:4 ESV). (from The Small Catechism, by Martin Luther ©Reclaim
Resources, Sola Publishing, 2011)
Benediction: Now
may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through
grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, comfort your hearts and strengthen
them in every good work and word. Amen. II Thess 2.16-17
*There are many patterns
for devotions. This pattern has been
followed by God’s people for centuries.
**The T.R.I.P. approach to
prayer is based on the way Martin Luther prayed and taught others to pray. It was later developed by Walter and Ingrid
Trobisch and then adapted by Mount Carmel Ministries (Alexandria, MN www.dailytext.com). The method is founded on scripture and easy
to remember:
T: thanksgiving
R: regret
(repentance)
I:
intercession (asking God to take a specific action)
P: plan or purpose
