Verse for the week: “You would shame the plans of the humble poor, but the Lord is his refuge.” Psalm 14.6
Prayer for the week: “Merciful God, you resist the
proud but give grace to the humble. Help
us to trust you utterly, to rest our hope and confidence in you, and to serve
you with pure hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen” (K.B. Ritter, Gebete
fur das jahr der Kirche, 2nd
ed. Kassel: Barenreiter Verlag, 1948, p. 193).
Bible reading for the day: Mark 7.1-13 (The self-righteous heart worries about
superficial cleanliness; so Jesus has to come and wash our dirty hearts to give
us what faith really is.)
1 Now when the Pharisees gathered to him, with
some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem, 2 they
saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were defiled, that is,
unwashed. 3 (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do
not eat unless they wash their hands properly, holding to the
tradition of the elders, 4 and when they come
from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many
other traditions that they observe, such as the washing of cups and
pots and copper vessels and dining couches.) 5 And
the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk
according to the tradition of the elders, but eat
with defiled hands?” 6 And he said to
them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written,
“‘This people honors me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me;
7 in vain do they worship me,
teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’
8 You leave the commandment
of God and hold to the tradition of men.”
9 And he said to
them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in
order to establish your tradition! 10 For Moses
said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘Whoever reviles
father or mother must surely die.’ 11 But you say,
‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever you would have gained from
me is Corban”’ (that is, given to God)— 12 then you
no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, 13 thus making
void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such
things you do.”
Prayer (based on T.R.I.P. method*): Gracious
and almighty Father, thank you for getting past our pots and pans and hands and
getting to the defiled heart of the matter: thank you for washing us, for
baptizing our whole selves – heart and all – into Christ’s death and
resurrection. Daily end all of our attempts to misuse your law to gain
righteousness… to prove ourselves “good people.” And daily raise me and my
congregation in Christ alone as our righteousness… that we may rightly serve
our families and the rest of the neighbors. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

“I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord…”
What does this mean?
I believe that Jesus Christ – true
God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the
Virgin Mary — is my Lord. He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature,
and has freed me from sin, death, and the power of the devil, not with silver
and gold, but with his holy and precious blood and his innocent suffering and
death. He has done all this in order that I might be his own, live under him in
his kingdom, and serve him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and
blessedness, even as he is risen from the dead and lives and reigns for all
eternity. This is most certainly true. (from The Small Catechism, by
Martin Luther)
Benediction: The
grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the
Holy Spirit be with us all. Amen. II Cor 13.14
