Verse for the week: How great is your goodness, O Lord…which you have done in the sight of all who put their trust in you. Psalm 31.19
Prayer for the week: “Merciful God, you resist the
proud but give grace to the humble. Help
us to trust you utterly, to rest our hope and confidence in you, and to serve
you with pure hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen” (K.B. Ritter, Gebete
fur das jahr der Kirche, 2nd
ed. Kassel: Barenreiter Verlag, 1948, p. 193).
Bible reading for the day: Ephesians
5.6-21 Sometime around 55AD, the
congregation in Ephesus was threatened by division caused by false doctrine.
Paul declares that our baptism into Christ makes us children of light.
Let no one deceive
you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes
upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do
not become partners with them; 8 for at one
time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as
children of light 9 (for the fruit of light is
found in all that is good and right and true), 10 and try
to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Take no
part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose
them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of
the things that they do in secret. 13 But
when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for
anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,
“Awake, O sleeper,
and arise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”
15 Look carefully then how
you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the
best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore
do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do
not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with
the Spirit, 19 addressing one another
in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the
Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and
for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting
to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Prayer (based on T.R.I.P. method*): Gracious
and almighty Father, thank you for delivering me from the darkness of my own
sin. Since Christ has exposed and swallowed up my shameful, unfruitful
darkness, shine his light right on me and for me… that I may walk in your ways
rather than my own… singing the melody of faith rather than the song of myself…and
giving thanks always to you; in the name of our Lord Jesus. Amen.

I believe in Jesus
Christ…
What does this
mean?
I believe that
Jesus Christ, true God son of the Father, and true man, born of the virgin
Mary, is my Lord. He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, and has
freed me from sin, death, and the power of the devil, not with silver and gold,
but with his holy and precious blood and his innocent suffering and death. He
has done all this in order that I might be his own, live under him in his
kingdom, and serve him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and
blessedness, even as he is risen from the dead and lives and reigns for all
eternity. This is most certainly true! (from “The Small Catechism” by Martin Luther

Benediction: The
grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the
Holy Spirit be with us all. Amen. II Cor 13.14
