Verse for the week: I am the living one; I died, and behold I am alive for
evermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades. Revelation 1.18
Prayer for the Week: “Almighty God, by the death of your Son you have destroyed sin and
death, and by his resurrection you have restored innocence and everlasting
life, in order that, delivered from the power of the devil, we may live in your
kingdom. Grant that we may believe this with our whole heart, and, steadfast in
this faith, may praise and thank you evermore; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.” (Martin Luther, Klugsches Gesangbuch, 1553; text in Allgemeines
Evangelisches Gebetbuch, 1955, p.430)
Bible reading for the day: Psalm 16 (note: hundreds of years before Christ, the
psalmist gives voice to the trust and hope that is ultimately fulfilled by the
Lord’s resurrection of the dead. In Act 2.25f, Luke will use v.8-11 of this
Psalm to announce the resurrection of Jesus).
Preserve
me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
2 I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
I have no good apart from you.”
2 I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
I have no good apart from you.”
3 As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,
in whom is all my delight.
in whom is all my delight.
4 The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply;
their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
or take their names on my lips.
their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
or take their names on my lips.
5 The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;
you hold my lot.
6 The lot lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.
you hold my lot.
6 The lot lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.
7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
in the night also my heart recalls his revelation to me.
8 I have set the Lord always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
in the night also my heart recalls his revelation to me.
8 I have set the Lord always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;
my flesh also dwells secure.
10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
or let your holy one see the pit
my flesh also dwells secure.
10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
or let your holy one see the pit
11 You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
prayer(based on
the TRIP** method): Gracious and almighty
Lord, in life and in death you are my refuge and my resurrection; I have no
good apart from you. Thank you! Preserve me from running after my will or
another god… such an errand only multiplies my sorrows. In this life I have
your presence and pleasant real estate right where you have put me; and in
eternity Christ has guaranteed me the BEST real estate of all at your right
hand… talk about location, location, location! Thank you, Lord; in Jesus’ name,
amen.

“I believe in Jesus Christ…”
What does this mean?
I believe that Jesus Christ —
true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the
Virgin Mary — is my Lord. He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature,
and has freed me from sin, death, and the power of the devil, not with silver
and gold, but with his holy and precious blood and his innocent suffering and
death. He has done all this in order that I might be his own, live under him in
his kingdom, and serve him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and
blessedness, even as he is risen from the dead and lives and reigns for all
eternity. This is most certainly true! (The
Small Catechism, by Martin Luther ©Reclaim Resources, Sola Publishing, 2011)
benediction:
And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace,
who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore,
support, strengthen, and establish you this day. To him be the power forever and ever. Amen. (1 Pet 5:10)
*There are many patterns for devotions. This pattern has been followed by God’s
people for centuries.
**The T.R.I.P. approach to prayer is based on the way Martin
Luther prayed and taught others to pray. It was later developed by Walter and Ingrid
Trobisch and then adapted by Mount Carmel Ministries (Alexandria, MN www.dailytext.com). The method is founded on scripture and easy
to remember: T:
thanksgiving
R:
regret (repentance)
I:
intercession (asking God to take a specific action)
P:
plan or purpose
Reading a biblical text and then applying this method gives
one a sound, simple way to form one’s prayers...not to mention that it helps
one learn how to faithfully reflect on God’s Word and talk to God.
