Verse for the week: I am the living one; I died, and behold I am alive for
evermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades. Revelation 1.18
Prayer for the Week: “Almighty God, by the death of your Son you have destroyed sin and
death, and by his resurrection you have restored innocence and everlasting
life, in order that, delivered from the power of the devil, we may live in your
kingdom. Grant that we may believe this with our whole heart, and, steadfast in
this faith, may praise and thank you evermore; through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.” (Martin Luther, Klugsches
Gesangbuch, 1553; text in Allgemeines Evangelisches Gebetbuch, 1955,
p.430)
Bible reading for the day: I Peter 1.1-9
1To
those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia,
Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 2 according
to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the
Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood:
May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According
to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living
hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an
inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in
heaven for you, 5 who by God's power are being
guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the
last time. 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a
little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so
that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that
perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result
in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Though
you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you
believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with
glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith,
the salvation of your souls.
prayer(based on
the TRIP** method): Gracious and almighty
Father, you do it ALL: you sent Jesus, you raised him from the dead to redeem
us, you give us the new birth of faith, and you guard us in this faith until
Christ’s return. Thank you, thank you! Keep it up Lord, for my congregation and
I can be so fickle and impure. Use various trials to refine our faith… to
result in praise and glory and honor to you alone, now and at the Last Day. In
Jesus’ name I ask this, amen.

“I believe in Jesus Christ…”
What does this mean?
I believe that Jesus Christ —
true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the
Virgin Mary — is my Lord. He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature,
and has freed me from sin, death, and the power of the devil, not with silver
and gold, but with his holy and precious blood and his innocent suffering and
death. He has done all this in order that I might be his own, live under him in
his kingdom, and serve him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and
blessedness, even as he is risen from the dead and lives and reigns for all
eternity. This is most certainly true! (The
Small Catechism, by Martin Luther ©Reclaim Resources, Sola Publishing, 2011)
benediction:
And after you have suffered for a
little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal
glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you
this day. To him be the power forever
and ever. Amen. (1 Pet 5:10)
*There are many patterns for devotions. This pattern has been followed by God’s
people for centuries.
**The T.R.I.P. approach to prayer is based on the way Martin
Luther prayed and taught others to pray. It was later developed by Walter and Ingrid
Trobisch and then adapted by Mount Carmel Ministries (Alexandria, MN www.dailytext.com).
The method is founded on scripture and easy to remember: T:
thanksgiving
R:
regret (repentance)
I:
intercession (asking God to take a specific action)
P:
plan or purpose
Reading a biblical text and then applying this method gives
one a sound, simple way to form one’s prayers...not to mention that it helps
one learn how to faithfully reflect on God’s Word and talk to God.
