Verse for the week: For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you
are light. Live as children of light— Ephesians 5.8
Bible reading for the day: Isaiah 56.1-8
(note: Our forebears’ neglect of the Sabbath and thus of their neighbor landed
them in nearly 50 years of exile in Babylon, 587-539 BC. Now the Lord is
restoring them and giving them a fresh start.)
1 Thus
says the Lord:
“Keep justice, and do righteousness,
for soon my salvation will come,
and my righteousness be revealed.
2 Blessed is the man who does this,
and the son of man who holds it fast,
who keeps the Sabbath, not profaning it,
and keeps his hand from doing any evil.”

and hold fast my covenant,
5 I will give in my house and within my walls
a monument and a name
better than sons and daughters;
I will give them an everlasting name
that shall not be cut off.
“The Lord will surely separate me from his people”;
and let not the eunuch say,
“Behold, I am a dry tree.”

Prayer(based on TRIP** method): Gracious and almighty Father thank you for putting
yourself, your living Word at the heart of our lives. Repent me and your church of the deadly,
deadly trap of forsaking you, forsaking the Sabbath. Each day, and each Sabbath, draw me and my
brothers & sisters to you…that we may gladly hear and learn your word, that
we may reach out to foreigners and welcome them into fellowship… that together
we may be built into your house of prayer.
I ask this in the name of the one who is your Living Word, Jesus Christ,
our Lord. Amen.
The Third Commandment: “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy”
What does this mean?
We should fear and love God
so that we do not despise his Word and the preaching of it, but acknowledge it

*There are many patterns for devotions. This pattern has been followed by God’s
people for centuries.
**The T.R.I.P. approach to prayer is based on the way Martin
Luther prayed and taught others to pray. It was later developed by Walter and Ingrid
Trobisch and then adapted by Mount Carmel Ministries (Alexandria , MN
www.dailytext.com). The method is founded on scripture and easy
to remember:

R:
regret (repentance)
I:
intercession (asking God to take a specific action)
P:
plan or purpose
Reading a biblical text and then applying this method gives
one a sound, simple way to form one’s prayers...not to mention that it helps
one learn how to faithfully reflect on God’s Word and talk to God.
