Verse for the week:
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6.2
Bible reading for the day: Romans 10.1-17 (note: Writing in 56 A.D.,
Paul expresses his heart’s desire and prayer that his fellow Israelites who do
not yet believe Jesus Christ, may be saved.
And then he drives the question right to us: how will anyone be saved
unless you and I preach Jesus to them?)
1 Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer
to God for them is that they may be saved. 2 For I
bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to
knowledge. 3 For, being ignorant of the
righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit
to God's righteousness. 4 For Christ is the
end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
5 For Moses writes
about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does
the commandments shall live by them. 6 But the
righteousness based on faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will
ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 “or
‘Who will descend into the abyss?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from
the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word
is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that
we proclaim); 9 because, if you confess with
your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God
raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For
with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses
and is saved. 11 For the Scripture
says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12 For
there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord
of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For “everyone
who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
14 How then will they call
on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in
him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to
hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are
they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are
the feet of those who preach the good news!” 16 But they
have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed
what he has heard from us?” 17 So faith comes from
hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Prayer (based on
T.R.I.P. method**): Gracious and almighty Father, thank you for
giving wrong ones like us what we do not deserve: your rightness in Jesus
Christ. Thank you! Repent me and my brothers and sisters of all our silly
stairway errands: climbing up the straw ladder of our rightness to reach you
and running down to wake you up and resurrect you. Grant us ears to hear you right
here on terra firma…that we may believe in our heart that Jesus is Lord and
confess with our lips and you raised him from the dead. Then send us into our families, our
congregation, and into the neighborhood to preach Jesus with our lips and lives
every day. I ask this in His name, amen.

“Thy kingdom come…”
What does this
mean?
The kingdom of God comes indeed by itself, without our
prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may also come to us.
How is this done?
God's kingdom comes when our heavenly Father gives us his
Holy Spirit, so that by his grace we believe his holy Word and live a godly
life now and in eternity. (from The Small Catechism, by Martin Luther

Benediction: The
grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the
Holy Spirit be with us all. Amen. II
Cor 13.14
*There are many patterns for devotions. This pattern has been followed by God’s
people for centuries.
**The T.R.I.P. approach to
prayer is based on the way Martin Luther prayed and taught others to pray. It was later developed by Walter and Ingrid
Trobisch and then adapted by Mount Carmel Ministries (Alexandria , MN
www.dailytext.com). The method is founded on scripture and easy
to remember:
T:
thanksgiving
R:
regret (repentance)
I:
intercession (asking God to take a specific action)
P:
plan or purpose
Reading a biblical text and
then applying this method gives one a sound, simple way to form one’s
prayers...not to mention that it helps one learn how to faithfully reflect on
God’s Word and talk to God.
