“Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures throughout all generations.” Psalm 145.13
Prayer for the week: Almighty God, Christ Jesus is the one who was, who is, and who is to
come. He will reign forever prophet, priest, and king. While we yet wait for
the fulfillment of his kingdom, grant that we may sing your praise and trust in
you alone; through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
Bible reading for the day: Matthew 20.20-28 (The setting is that the
Lord has just told a parable exposing his generosity and our stinginess when it
comes to forgiveness; and he has foretold his death a third time. Now this…)
20 Then the mother of the
sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and kneeling before him she
asked him for something. 21 And he said to
her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Say that these two sons of
mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your
kingdom.” 22 Jesus answered, “You do not know
what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to
drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” 23 He
said to them, “You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and
at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has
been prepared by my Father.” 24 And when the
ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. 25 But
Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the
Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over
them. 26 It shall not be so among you. But whoever
would be great among you must be your servant, 27 and
whoever would be first among you must be your slave, 28 even
as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his
life as a ransom for many.”
Prayer of the Day: Gracious and almighty Father, thank you for the one who came not to be
served, but to serve sinners by giving his life as the ransom for us. Thank you
for Jesus, our savior. Ransom us and our mothers away from all our attempts –
subtle or brazen – to use authority for ourselves. Teach us to rightly exercise
the authority you have given us to forgive and retain sins… that more forgiven
ones may find themselves seated at your table in your kingdom. In Jesus’ name I ask this, amen.

What is the “Office of the Keys”?
It is that authority
which Christ gave to his church to forgive the sins of those who repent
and to declare to those who do not repent that their sins are not forgiven.
What are the words of Christ? Our Lord Jesus
Christ said to his disciples: “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the
sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are
retained.” John 20.23
“Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall
be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
Matthew 18.18 (from The Small Catechism,
by Martin Luther)
he adorns the humble with salvation. Psalm 149.4
*This is now
our congregation’s 99th year in the Word. In 2025, we are reading
from Genesis to Revelation, with a few interludes along the way.
