(it's good stress)
Verse for the week:
As you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters,
you did it to me. Matt 25.40
Prayer for the week:
“Merciful God, kindle in our hearts the fire of your love, that we
may serve our neighbor according to your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen” (K.B. Ritter, Gebete
fur das jahr der Kirched, 2nd
ed. Kassel: Barenreiter Verlag, 1948, p. 199).
Bible reading for the day: Philippians 1.1-2, 12-14,19-30 (note: Paul writes
from prison, either in Rome or Ephesus. Far from bemoaning his circumstances,
he wants us to know that his imprisonment is actually serving to advance the
Gospel.)
Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus,
To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at
Philippi, with the overseers and deacons:
2 Grace to you and peace
from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
14I want you to know, brothers, that what
has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, 13 so
that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to
all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. 14 And
most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment,
are much more bold to speak the word without fear.
21 For to me to live is Christ, and to
die is gain. 22 If I am to live in the flesh, that
means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. 23 I
am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with
Christ, for that is far better. 24 But to remain in
the flesh is more necessary on your account. 25 Convinced
of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your
progress and joy in the faith, 26 so that in
me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming
to you again.
27 Only let your
manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I
come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing
firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of
the gospel, 28 and not frightened in anything by
your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction,
but of your salvation, and that from God. 29 For it
has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe
in him but also suffer for his sake, 30 engaged
in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.
Prayer (based on T.R.I.P. method*): Gracious
and almighty Father, thank you for granting it to me and to my brothers &
sisters not only to believe in Christ, but also to suffer for him. Deliver us
from fleeing the good struggle and from being frightened in any way of those
who oppose you. Each day, convince me
and my congregation of your calling for us…that we may stand firm in the Holy
Spirit and strive together as one for the faith of the gospel. I ask this in Jesus’ name, amen.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord…
What does this mean?
I believe that Jesus Christ — true God, begotten of the
Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary — is my Lord.
He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, and has freed me from sin,
death, and the power of the devil, not with silver and gold, but with his holy
and precious blood and his innocent suffering and death. He has done all this
in order that I might be his own, live under him in his kingdom, and serve him
in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, even as he is risen
from the dead and lives and reigns for all eternity. This is most certainly
true! (from The Small Catechism,
by Martin Luther ©Reclaim Resources, Sola Publishing, 2011)
Benediction: Now
to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far
more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in
Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. (Eph 3:20-21)
T: thanksgiving
