Verse for the week: “…the King of kings and Lord of lords. 16It is he alone who has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see; to him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen. I Timothy 6.15-16
Prayer for the week: “O Lord, our most gracious
Redeemer and King, dwell and reign within us, take possession of us by your
Spirit, and reign where you have a right to reign, and spread your kingdom
throughout the world, now and forever. Amen” (Father
John of the
Bible reading for the day: Luke 23.27-38
27And there followed him a great multitude of
the people and of women who were mourning and lamenting for him. 28 But
turning to them Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me,
but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For
behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the
barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ 30 Then
they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover
us.’ 31 For if they do these things
when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”
32 Two others, who were criminals,
were led away to be put to death with him. 33 And
when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him,
and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. 34 And
Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they
do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments. 35 And the
people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him,
saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he
is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!” 36 The
soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine 37 and
saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” 38 There
was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.”
Prayer (based on T.R.I.P. method*): Gracious and almighty Father, in this world we get the rulers and candidates we seem to deserve, yet you give us the King we don’t deserve; the one who intercedes for us: “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” Thank you for Jesus who came not to save himself, but sinners like us. Rescue us from the pride and self-defensiveness that sees no reason to weep for ourselves and our children and repent. Reign in and over me and your church in such a way that instead of standing by watching, we may step forward and confess Christ the King; in his name I ask this. Amen.

“I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.”
What does this mean? I believe that Jesus Christ — true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary — is my Lord. He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, and has freed me from sin, death, and the power of the devil, not with silver and gold, but with his holy and precious blood and his innocent suffering and death. He has done all this in order that I might be his own, live under him in his kingdom, and serve him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, even as he is risen from the dead and lives and reigns for all eternity. This is most certainly true! (from The Small Catechism, by Martin Luther ©Reclaim Resources, Sola Publishing, 2011)
Benediction: The God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing, that we may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. (Romans 15.13)
