...is on our side.
Verse for the week: “The Lord has done great
things for us; we are glad.” Psalm 126.3
Prayer for the week: “Almighty and everlasting God,
increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain
what you have already promised, make us love what you command; through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen” (Lutheran Book of Worship, prayer for the 23rd
Sunday after Pentecost).
Bible reading for the day: Hebrews 7.23-28
23 The former priests were many in number,
because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, 24 but
he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. 25 Consequently,
he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to
God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.
26 For it was indeed
fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent,
unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the
heavens. 27 He has no need, like those high
priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for
those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up
himself. 28 For the law appoints men in their weakness
as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law,
appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever.
Prayer (based on T.R.I.P. method*): Gracious
and almighty Father, thank you for not leaving us under an old, religious system
of sacrifice; thank you for providing us with the true high priest who serves
us in purity and perfection: your Son, Jesus Christ. He is exactly the one
utter sinners like us need… and he continues on the job for us, we have your
oath on it. Thank you, in Jesus’ name, amen.

“I believe in the Holy Spirit…”
What does this mean?
I believe that I cannot, by my own understanding or effort,
believe in Jesus Christ my Lord, or come to him. But the Holy Spirit has called
me through the Gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, and sanctified and kept
me in true faith. In the same way he calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies
the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it united with Jesus Christ in
the one true faith. In this Christian church day after day he fully forgives my
sins and the sins of all believers. On the last day he will raise me and all
the dead and give me and all believers in Christ eternal life. This is most
certainly true. (from The Small Catechism, by Martin Luther)
From this time on and forevermore. Ps 121.7-8
T: thanksgiving
