Deliverance from your presumptuousness

    therefore my soul keeps them.

    it imparts understanding to the simple.

    as is your way with those who love your name.

Prayer (based on T.R.I.P. method*): Gracious and almighty Father, thank you for your testimonies; your word alone gives light and life. Deliver me and my congregation from our presumptuousness; from our own reason and understanding… for we gain not eternal life through them, but only through Christ. Kneel us down in our little prayer room, that our mouth’s may open and pant for you. Turn again today and be gracious to us, steady my steps according to your promise, make your face shine upon us and teach us your statutes. In Jesus name I pray, amen.

“Hallowed be thy name…”

What does this mean?

God’s name is certainly holy in itself, but we ask in this prayer that we may keep it holy.

When does this happen?

God’s name is hallowed whenever his Word is taught in its truth and purity and we as children of God live in harmony with it. Help us to do this, heavenly Father! But anyone who teaches or lives contrary to the Word of God dishonors God’s name among us. Keep us from doing this, heavenly Father!  (from The Small Catechism, by Martin Luther)

Benediction:  Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. (Eph 3:20-21) 

*The T.R.I.P. approach to prayer is based on the way Martin Luther prayed and taught others to pray.  It was later developed by Walter and Ingrid Trobisch and then adapted by Mount Carmel Ministries (Alexandria, MN).  The method is founded on scripture and easy to remember:
T: thanksgiving
R: regret (repentance)
I: intercession (asking God to take a specific action)
P: plan or purpose
Reading a biblical text and then applying this method gives one a sound, simple way to form one’s prayers...not to mention that it helps one learn how to faithfully reflect on God’s Word and talk to God.
