Verse for the week:
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6.2
Prayer for the week: “Lord, take our bodies and our
minds and make them wholly yours. So
increase your grace in us that not our own desires but your holy will may rule
us all in all; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.” (K.B. Ritter, Gebete fur das jahr der Kirched, 2nd ed. Kassel: Barenreiter Verlag, 1948, p. 185).
Bible reading for the day: Ecclesiastes 1.1-2,12-14;
2.18-26
1 The words of the Preacher, the son
of David, king in Jerusalem.
2 Vanity of vanities,
says the Preacher,
vanity of vanities! All is vanity.
vanity of vanities! All is vanity.
12I the Preacher have been king over
Israel in Jerusalem. 13 And I applied my
heart to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven.
It is an unhappy business that God has given to the children of man to be
busy with. 14 I have seen everything that is done under
the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind.
2.18 I hated all my toil in which I toil
under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to the man who will come after
me, 19 and who knows whether he will be wise or a
fool? Yet he will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under
the sun. This also is vanity. 20 So I turned
about and gave my heart up to despair over all the toil of my labors under
the sun, 21 because sometimes a person who has
toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave everything to be enjoyed
by someone who did not toil for it. This also is vanity and a great evil.22 What
has a man from all the toil and striving of heart with which he toils
beneath the sun? 23 For all his days are full
of sorrow, and his work is a vexation. Even in the night his heart does
not rest. This also is vanity.
24 There is nothing better for
a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his
toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God, 25 for
apart from him who can eat or who can have enjoyment?26 For
to the one who pleases him God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, but
to the sinner he has given the business of gathering and
collecting, only to give to one who pleases God. This also is vanity
and a striving after wind.
Prayer (based on
T.R.I.P. method**): Gracious and almighty Father, thank you for revealing
yourself in Christ Jesus, he is the solid one. The projects of my will are but
mist, a vapor; grant me and my congregation to see through the business of
gathering and collecting. Each day teach us the wisdom that knows enjoyment in
our toil… that hears our vocation for our neighbor. In Jesus’ name I ask this,
amen.

“I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord…”
What does this mean?
I believe that Jesus Christ — true God, begotten of the
Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary — is my Lord.
He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, and has freed me from sin,
death, and the power of the devil, not with silver and gold, but with his holy
and precious blood and his innocent suffering and death. He has done all this
in order that I might be his own, live under him in his kingdom, and serve him
in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, even as he is risen
from the dead and lives and reigns for all eternity. This is most certainly
true! (from The Small Catechism, by Martin Luther, ©Reclaim Resources,
Sola Publishing, 2011)
Benediction: The
God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing, that we may abound in
hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Amen. (Romans 15.13)
*There are many patterns for devotions. This pattern has been followed by God’s
people for centuries.
**The T.R.I.P. approach to
prayer is based on the way Martin Luther prayed and taught others to pray. It was later developed by Walter and Ingrid
Trobisch and then adapted by Mount Carmel Ministries (Alexandria , MN
www.dailytext.com). The method is founded on scripture and easy
to remember: T:
thanksgiving
R: regret
(repentance)
I:
intercession (asking God to take a specific action)
P:
plan or purpose
Reading a biblical text and
then applying this method gives one a sound, simple way to form one’s
prayers...not to mention that it helps one learn how to faithfully reflect on
God’s Word and talk to God.
