Verse of the week: “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit,
says the Lord of hosts.” Zech 4.6
Prayer of the week: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the almighty God, send
your Holy Spirit into our hearts through your blessed word, that he may rule
and guide us according to your will; strengthen us in every trial and need; and
lead us, past all error, into your truth; that we may stand fast in faith,
increase in love and all good works, and by the sure hope of your grace, which
you have obtained for us by your death, be saved eternally; for you live and
reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen. (Viet
Dietrich in Otto Dietz, Die Evangelien-Kooekten des Viet Dietrich, p.
57)
Bible reading for the day: John 14.22-31 (note: the scene is just an hour or so
before Jesus’ is arrested. One of his disciples asks him a question and Jesus
responds straightforwardly: he is going away and the Holy Spirit, the Helper,
will be coming to us.)
22 Judas
(not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest
yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus
answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father
will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with
him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my
words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent
me.
25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still
with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy
Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all
things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 Peace
I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give
to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be
afraid. 28 You heard me say to you, ‘I am
going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced,
because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than
I. 29 And now I have told you before it takes
place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30 I
will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is
coming. He has no claim on me, 31 but I
do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I
love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.
Prayer (based on TRIP** method): Gracious and almighty Father, thank you for sending
Jesus to reveal your love for sinners and for sending us his Holy Spirit to
make us right at home in your Word while we wait for his return. In this
meantime, defend me and my congregation against the ruler of this world; give
us the untroubled heart that fears, loves, and trusts you above all else… for
then we have the peace that this world cannot give. I ask this in Jesus’ name,
amen.

“I believe in
the Holy Spirit…”
What does this mean?
I believe that I cannot by my
own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ my Lord or come to him; but the
Holy Spirit has called me through the Gospel, enlightened me with his gifts,
and sanctified and preserved me in the true faith. In the same way, he calls,
gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and
preserves it in unity with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this
Christian church, he daily forgives abundantly all my sins and the sins of all
believers. At the last day, he will raise me and all the dead and will grant
everlasting life to me and to all who believe in Christ. This is most certainly
true! (from “The Small Catechism” by Martin Luther, © Sola Publishing, Reclaim
Resources, 2011)
Benediction: The God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in
believing, that we may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. (Romans
15.13)
*There are many patterns for devotions. This pattern has been followed by God’s
people for centuries.
**The T.R.I.P. approach to prayer is based on the way Martin
Luther prayed and taught others to pray.
It was later developed by Walter and Ingrid Trobisch and then adapted by
Mount Carmel Ministries (Alexandria ,
MN www.dailytext.com). The method is founded on scripture and easy
to remember: T:
thanksgiving
R:
regret (repentance)
I:
intercession (asking God to take a specific action)
P:
plan or purpose
Reading a biblical text and then applying this method gives
one a sound, simple way to form one’s prayers...not to mention that it helps
one learn how to faithfully reflect on God’s Word and talk to God.
