Verse for the week: If we walk in the light as he himself is in the light,
we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us
from all sin. (I John 1.7)
Prayer for the week: Almighty and everlasting God, in the wonder of Christ’s death and
resurrection, you reconciled the world to yourself, erased your own score
against us, and entrusted your message to us.
Grant that all who have been reborn into the fellowship of Christ’s body
may be ambassadors for him, showing forth in their lives what they profess by
their faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and
the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen. (adapted from The
Book of Common Prayer, based on II Corinthians 5)
Bible reading for the day: John 13.31-38
When he (Judas) had gone out,
Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32
If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and
glorify him at once. 33 Little children, yet a little while I am
with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say
to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ 34 A new commandment I
give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are
to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my
disciples, if you have love for one another.”
36 Simon
Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am
going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward.” 37 Peter
said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for
you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly,
truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three
times.
prayer(based on
the TRIP** method): Gracious and almighty
Father, thank you that your glory is in the cross and in justifying sinners
like us through it. Thank you! Repent me
and my brothers and sisters of dishonesty when it comes to the depth of our sin
and the cost to you. Each day, transform us and teach us to love one another
and to give ourselves for each other just as you have for us… that all people
may know that we are your disciples. I
ask this in Jesus’ name, amen.

“I believe in Jesus Christ…”
What does this mean?
I believe that Jesus Christ —
true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the
Virgin Mary — is my Lord. He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature,
and has freed me from sin, death, and the power of the devil, not with silver
and gold, but with his holy and precious blood and his innocent suffering and
death. He has done all this in order that I might be his own, live under him in
his kingdom, and serve him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and
blessedness, even as he is risen from the dead and lives and reigns for all
eternity. This is most certainly true! (from The Small Catechism, by Martin
Luther ©Reclaim Resources, Sola Publishing, 2011).
*There are many patterns for devotions. This pattern has been followed by God’s
people for centuries.
**The T.R.I.P. approach to prayer is based on the way Martin
Luther prayed and taught others to pray. It was later developed by Walter and Ingrid
Trobisch and then adapted by Mount Carmel Ministries (Alexandria , MN
www.dailytext.com). The method is founded on scripture and easy
to remember:
T:
thanksgiving
R:
regret (repentance)
I:
intercession (asking God to take a specific action)
P:
plan or purpose
Reading a biblical text and then applying this method gives
one a sound, simple way to form one’s prayers...not to mention that it helps
one learn how to faithfully reflect on God’s Word and talk to God.
