Verse for the week:
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6.2
Prayer: “Lord,
take our bodies and our minds and make them wholly yours. So increase your grace in us that not our own
desires but your holy will may rule us all in all; through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.” (K.B. Ritter, Gebete fur das jahr
der Kirched, 2nd ed.
Kassel: Barenreiter Verlag, 1948, p. 185).
Bible reading for the day: Ephesians 2.1-10
1 And you were dead in the trespasses and
sins 2 in which you once walked, following the
course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the
spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among
whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the
desires of the body and the mind, and were by
nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind 4 But God,
being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved
us, 5 even when we were dead in our
trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been
saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated
us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so
that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace
in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by
grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own
doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result
of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we
are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which
God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Prayer (based on
T.R.I.P. method**): Gracious and almighty Father, thank you for
saving us by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Our boasting can be so subtle
and yet so prevalent; put it to death, Lord… that we may be free to be your
workmanship instead of our own… and may walk in the good works you have already
prepared for us. In Jesus’ name I ask this, amen.
I believe in Jesus
Christ his only Son, our Lord…
What does this
mean?
I believe that Jesus Christ — true God, begotten of the
Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary — is my Lord.
He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, and has freed me from sin,
death, and the power of the devil, not with silver and gold, but with his holy
and precious blood and his innocent suffering and death. He has done all this
in order that I might be his own, live under him in his kingdom, and serve him
in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, even as he is risen
from the dead and lives and reigns for all eternity. This is most certainly
true! (from The Small Catechism, by Martin Luther, ©Reclaim Resources,
Sola Publishing, 2011)
Benediction: The
grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the
Holy Spirit be with us all. Amen. II Cor 13.14
*There are many patterns for devotions. This pattern has been followed by God’s
people for centuries.
**The T.R.I.P. approach to
prayer is based on the way Martin Luther prayed and taught others to pray. It was later developed by Walter and Ingrid
Trobisch and then adapted by Mount Carmel Ministries (Alexandria , MN
www.dailytext.com). The method is founded on scripture and easy
to remember:
T:
thanksgiving
R:
repentance
I:
intercession (asking God to take a specific action)
P:
plan or purpose
Reading a biblical text and
then applying this method gives one a sound, simple way to form one’s
prayers...not to mention that it helps one learn how to faithfully reflect on
God’s Word and talk to God.
