Verse for the week:
God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.
Acts 2.36
Morning Prayer: “Almighty,
everlasting God, you have given us the promise of your divine life. Bestow upon us your Holy Spirit, that,
quickened by your word, we may lay hold on eternal life by strong faith in your
Son, and in him be saved; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen. (K.B.
Ritter, Gebete fur das Jahr der Kirche, 2nd ed. (Kassel:
Johannes Stauda-Verllag, 1948), p.170)
Bible reading for the day: Mark 3.20-30
20 Then he went home, and the crowd gathered
again, so that they could not even eat. 21 And when his family heard
it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, “He is out of his mind.”
22 And the scribes who came down from
Jerusalem were saying, “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and “by the prince of
demons he casts out the demons.” 23 And he called them to him and
said to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? 24 If a
kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And
if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26
And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot
stand, but is coming to an end. 27 But no one can enter a strong
man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. Then
indeed he may plunder his house.
28 “Truly, I say to you, all sins will be
forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, 29 but
whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty
of an eternal sin”— 30 for they were saying, “He has an unclean
spirit.”
Prayer (based on
T.R.I.P. method**): Gracious and almighty Father, thank you for
coming in Jesus to bind Satan and free us from slavery in his house. Repent me and your whole church of
underestimating the Enemy and of rejecting your grace. Though overcome by you,
Lord, Satan is still prowling around and there are many who do not even
recognize his thrall. Pour out your Holy
Spirit and use me and my brothers and sisters in Christ to get word to those
captives so that they may be set free.
In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

Benediction: The
grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the
Holy Spirit be with us all. Amen. II
Cor 13.14
*There are many patterns for devotions. This pattern has been followed by God’s
people for centuries.
**The T.R.I.P. approach to
prayer is based on the way Martin Luther prayed and taught others to pray. It was later developed by Walter and Ingrid
Trobisch and then adapted by Mount Carmel Ministries (Alexandria , MN
www.dailytext.com). The method is founded on scripture and easy
to remember:
T:
thanksgiving
R: regret
(repentance)
I:
intercession (asking God to take a specific action)
P:
plan or purpose
Reading a biblical text and
then applying this method gives one a sound, simple way to form one’s
prayers...not to mention that it helps one learn how to faithfully reflect on
God’s Word and talk to God.
