Verse for the week:
As you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my
family, you did it to me. Matt 25.40
Prayer for the week: “Merciful God, kindle in our
hearts the fire of your love, that we may serve you and our neighbor, according
to your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen” (K.B.
Ritter, Gebete fur das jahr der Kirched, 2nd
ed. Kassel: Barenreiter Verlag, 1948, p.
199).
Bible reading for the day: James 1.17-25
17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is
from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no
variation or shadow due to change. 18 Of his own will he brought us
forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his
creatures.
19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every
person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20 for the
anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore
put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the
implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers
only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word
and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror.
24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he
was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of
liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he
will be blessed in his doing.
Prayer (based on T.R.I.P. method**): Gracious
and almighty Father, in Christ you give me and my brothers and sisters every
good and perfect gift. Of your own will – not ours – you bring us forth by the
word of truth that is Christ Jesus. Thank you!
Circumcise our proud ears and hearts… that by your grace, the word we
hear from you may be the word we do. I
ask this in Jesus’ name, amen.

“Hallowed be thy name…”
What does this mean?
God's name is indeed
holy in itself, but we pray in this petition that it may be kept holy also
among us.
How is this done?
God's name is
hallowed when his Word is taught in its truth and purity and we, as God's
children, lead holy lives in harmony with it. Grant this to us, dear Father in
heaven! But whoever teaches and lives in ways other than what God's Word
teaches dishonors the name of God among us. Prevent us from doing this,
heavenly Father! (from The Small Catechism, by Martin
Luther ©Reclaim Resources, Sola Publishing, 2011)
Benediction: The
God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing, that we may abound in
hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Amen. (Romans 15.13)
*There are many patterns for devotions. This pattern has been followed by God’s
people for centuries.
**The T.R.I.P. approach to
prayer is based on the way Martin Luther prayed and taught others to pray. It was later developed by Walter and Ingrid
Trobisch and then adapted by Mount Carmel Ministries (Alexandria ,
MN www.dailytext.com). The method is founded on scripture and easy
to remember: T:
thanksgiving
R: regret
(repentance)
I:
intercession (asking God to take a specific action)
P:
plan or purpose
Reading a biblical text and
then applying this method gives one a sound, simple way to form one’s
prayers...not to mention that it helps one learn how to faithfully reflect on
God’s Word and talk to God.
