Verse for the week: God is light and in him is no darkness at all. I John 1.5
Prayer for the week: Gracious Lord God, magnify the wisdom of your ways for us and grant
that in childlike trust we may commit ourselves to your fatherly guidance. Uphold us by your hand, guide us with your
counsel, and receive us at last into glory; through Jesus Christ, your Son our
Lord. Amen.” (adapted from, Kirchenbuch fur die Gemeinde (Isenhagen), quoted
in Orate Fratres, p. 64).
Bible reading for the day: Genesis
28.10-22
Jacob left Beersheba and went
toward Haran. 11 And he came to a certain
place and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the
stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to
sleep. 12 And he dreamed, and behold, there
was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And
behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it! 13 And
behold, the Lord stood above it and said, “I am
the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The
land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring. 14 Your
offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad
to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you
and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 15 Behold, I
am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to
this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised
you.” 16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said,
“Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.”17 And
he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the
house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”
18 So early in the morning Jacob took the stone that he
had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on
the top of it. 19 He called the name of that
place Bethel, but the name of the city was Luz at the first. 20 Then
Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me in this way
that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, 21 so
that I come again to my father's house in peace, then
the Lord shall be my God, 22 and this
stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God's house. And of
all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you.”
prayer(based on
the TRIP** method): Gracious and almighty
Father, from Abraham, to Isaac, to Jacob, all the way down to me…you have kept
your promise. Thank you for your great
faithfulness, O Lord. Repent me and my
congregation of not trusting your promise. Throughout the coming year keep me
and my family in your way, that in thought, word and giving we may fear, love
and trust you above all else. I ask this
in Jesus’ name. Amen.

“Give us this day our daily bread…
What
does this mean?
God indeed gives daily bread
to all sinners, even without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that he
would help us to recognize this so that we would receive our daily bread with
thanksgiving.
What is meant by daily
bread?
Daily bread includes everything
required to meet our earthly needs, such as food, drink, clothing, home,
property, employment, necessities, devout parents, children, and communities,
honest and faithful authorities, good government, seasonable weather, peace,
health, an orderly society, a good reputation, true friends and neighbors, and
the like. (from The Small Catechism by Martin Luther © Reclaim
Resources, Sola Publishing, 2011)
benediction:
The Lord will keep you from all
evil; he will keep your life.
The
Lord will keep your going out and your coming in
From
this time on and forevermore. Ps 121.7-8
*There are many patterns for devotions. This pattern has been followed by God’s
people for centuries.
**The T.R.I.P. approach to prayer is based on the way Martin
Luther prayed and taught others to pray. It was later developed by Walter and Ingrid
Trobisch and then adapted by Mount Carmel Ministries (Alexandria , MN
www.dailytext.com). The method is founded on scripture and easy
to remember:
T:
thanksgiving
R:
regret (repentance)
I:
intercession (asking God to take a specific action)
P:
plan or purpose
Reading a biblical text and then applying this method gives
one a sound, simple way to form one’s prayers...not to mention that it helps
one learn how to faithfully reflect on God’s Word and talk to God.
